RESPONSIBILITIES

The responsibilities of the General Manager include, but are not limited to:

Operational & Strategic Leadership

  • Serve as the single point of accountability for all operations
  • Collaborate with leadership on EOS-style planning, KPIs, and structured leadership meetings
  • Drive continuous improvement through clear priorities, reporting, and issue resolution
  • Ensure efficient yard, fleet, and dispatch operations with hands-on visibility

Safety, Compliance, & Systems

  • Own compliance of all Federal and State Regulatory Standards (OSHA, DOT, EPA, FMCSA, DEQ, and other standards).
  • Maintain audit readiness and ensure completion of all required safety and regulatory tasks
  • Implement and manage operational systems, SOPs, and performance dashboards
  • Support technology and facility infrastructure as needed

People & Culture

  • Coach and develop frontline managers; build trust and team accountability
  • Promote cross-training, clear communication, and values-driven leadership
  • Maintain low turnover rates with a culture of consistency, ownership, and recognition

External Relationships

  • Strengthen relationships with vendors, customers, and community partners
  • Support sales of ferrous and non-ferrous scrap as needed
  • Represent the company in industry associations, external initiatives and workforce development efforts

Success Milestones

  • 1 Month: Shadow operations across departments; build trust; learn workflows and EOS basics
  • 3 Months: Strong rapport with team; understand "what and why" of operations
  • 6 Months: Begin process improvements; lead L10s; apply EOS principles
  • 12 Months: Own operations; improve profitability, reporting, and team development

 

** This is a full-time, on-site role in Portland, OR. Typical working hours are Monday–Friday, 6:00 AM to 3:00 PM, with some flexibility. **


QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • 3+ years of proven operations leadership in fast-paced, regulated industries (e.g., recycling, manufacturing, logistics, wholesale), managing both field and office-based teams
  • Proven experience mentoring frontline and mid-level managers, implementing systems and supporting strategic planning
  • Solid understanding of Federal and State (OSHA, DOT, EPA, FMCSA, DEQ, etc.) compliance requirements
  • Tech-savvy and quick to learn new software, databases, and tools
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, logistics, engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)

Preferred

  • Background in the metal recycling industry
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English
  • Comfortable working with ownership in founder-led or privately held businesses
  • Experience in mid-size or larger organizations
  • MBA or other relevant advanced degree

Desired

  • Skilled in strategic planning and execution

Salary: $120,000 to $150,000 depending on experience
